I'd always heard and read just the opposite, that the spray didn't work all that well?

I prefer the spray simply because it's undectable to the naked eye. There are laws that prohibit use of anything that obstructs the tag. They covers do so in an "obvious" manner where the spray does so surrepitiously;)
 
Really Surprised

That is very surprising, they did that whole scenario on "Mythbusters" and got a good shot of the plate every time. I wonder if the place they tested in that video had some real old technology.
