Oil Change question

Getting ready to do my first oil/filter change in the driveway. I read it takes 6.5 qts, is it ok if I fill it up with 7?

If the manual calls for 6.5 quarts...that's ALL that i'd put in!
That being said, check your dip stick at 6.5 to see where the level is at. If it's reading "add" then go ahead. Too much oil can be harmful to any motor, although i'm not certain what a 1/2 quart (over) will do.? Better to be safe than sorry!:yesnod:

yea i hear ya. thanks for the reply. I will just hold on to it for next time, then i will only have to buy 6 qts.

what a pain in the ass!! ok so i planned on doing my oil change earlier today, something came up so i put it off, tried again a few hours later only to realize the low profile jack i bought still wouldnt get the front end off the ground cuz there was no room to pump it up!! ARRRGHHH!!

Looks like im buying ramps!!! :banghead:

Chris,

Do you have access to any boards that you can drive up on?
Like 2x4's or 2x6's. Enough to get you the clearance you need to use the jack effectively? You may have to sort of stack them in a ramp type fashion in order to accomplish this though.

The reason I ask is because, the ramps you buy (unless you get low profile ramps)? may be too steep :NoNo: for the front of your Vette to clear.

:iagree: :iagree:
A friend of mine actually built his own ramps using 2x12's. They have a very long incline to accommodate the vette.

Thanks guys,

I went over to my folks house as he has some spare boards and such. I ended up driving up on 2x4's high enough to get a smaller jack underneath and get some pumps going. Finally got the front on Jack stands. Then i used my new jack to get the rear higher on jack stands.

Next came a new PITA, the drain plug!! :banghead: This thing must have been loc-tited on or something!! 20mins of fighting that thing a got it broke loose. Replaced it with a magnetic tip plug.

Now that I have my first one under my belt, i'll know what to expect on the next one and it shouldn't take as long.

OK , tell me why i need to fill my oil filter before I install it. I am going to change my oil this weekend. Is there some sort of an airlock or what?
Thanks,
Joe B.

Well...

when you finish changing the oil (without filling the filter) and check the level on the dip stick, it'll read "full".
BUT once you start the car up and let her run for a bit, the oil circulates filling the filter up. Now you turn the engine off letting it sit for a few, then check the dip stick again, you're going to be... let's say 1/2 quart low.

*Also...i'm not sure of the direction of flow for oil in the motor, but for the time it takes the oil to fill the filter up...your motor is running w/out lubrication. This may be a mute point.?:shrug01:

Ray, after posting my dumba$$ question I realized just how stupid it sounds. The oil is picked up by the oil pump from the pickup tube in the oilpan. The most damaging time when starting a car would naturally be after the car has sat a few months allowing the lubricant on the internal metal to metal or friction surfaces to contact without the benefit of lubricant. Any air within the system would naturally work it's way out of the oil during circulation. :ack2:
